Food waste represents 40 to 60% of white bags from Brussels households (Bruxelles environnement). The Dansaert Center collaborates with the Recyclo company for the valorization of the organic waste through the Compost in City project.
What is Recyclo?
Recyclo is a cooperative aimed at collecting and valorizing various waste streams to extract and leverage resource potential. The company’s goal is to identify potential avenues (e.g., transforming orange peels into insulation panels, valorizing cut hair, etc.).
Organic waste streams are collected using cargo bikes, composted within the framework of regulations on Class 3 animal by-products (traceability, compost hygienization, temperature monitoring, analysis). These wastes are composted through a network of composting pavilions with a capacity of 25 tons or more, distributed across various small sites in the Brussels-Capital region.

Why sort your organic waste?
Sorting allows for the valorization of waste, representing 40% of the content of our white bags. Recycled into compost, food waste returns to the soil, contributing to the natural cycle of our food. These wastes can also be transformed into energy.
In the Brussels region, since May 15, 2023, this sorting is mandatory for everyone: organic waste or food waste, as well as green waste, should no longer be placed in white bags. Find the solutions by clicking here.
